Brighton has joined the City of Rochester, County of Monroe and other towns to entice Google to select the greater Rochester area as a trial location for its high speed broadband network initiative Google Fiber for Communities.
Google plans to test ultra-high speed broadband networks in one or more trial locations, and these networks will deliver Internet speeds more than 100 times faster than what most Americans have access to today at over 1 gigabit per second. Google plans to offer service at a competitive price to at least 50,000 and potentially up to 500,000 people. Google has asked interested municipalities to provide information about their communities through a Request for information (RFI), with a submission deadline of March 26th.
Brighton Supervisor Sandra Frankel said “Google’s Fiber for Communities initiative is an exciting opportunity to develop a world-class broadband network throughout our community. Our area has many potential users for ultra high speed internet service, and would be an ideal location for a test site. We are pleased to join with the City, County and other towns to present a comprehensive response to Google’s request for information.”
